PROJECT 1

Famous People, Familiar Faces - Diagrammatic Abstraction

The first project requires students to ‘learn from precedents’ (which relates to the History of Modern Architecture lectures) by interpretation and exploration of solids, planes, lines and frames in architectural design. Emphasis is given to the elements of architecture and architectonics that generate architectural form and space, produced by drawing and making.

In a group of 5, we were required to select 1 of the Master Architects from list and analyse his architectural work. We selected Alvar Aalto and his masterpiece, Villa Mairea as our research topic.

A completed set of architectural drawings and a set of 10 diagrammatic models were produced according our analysis and research.

PROJECT 2A                                                 Introduction to Site Analysis + Picnic Pavilion

For the preparation of the following projects, we had visited to Eagle Ranch Resort, Port Dickson. We were divided into 2 group to carry out different site analysis.

In a group of 2, we were given another task to design a picnic pavilion on the site. My partner and I had chosen Wendell Berry, an environmental activist as our client. Some research and analysis had been conducted to understand our client's character and his requirements.

The pavilion should be designed with a maximum volume of 30m3 with the purpose of eating and relaxing.

PROJECT 2B                                                                             Retreat House

In the final project, we were required to design a retreat house for the same client in project 2 individually. This retreat house must function as habitable architectural spaces to enable the activity associated with living, dining, showering, cooking, storage and such within the built up space of 150 m2. This project was integrated with Building Construction 1 which required us to show the detail parts of our designs and the method of construction.

Throughout this project, I found that user requirements are important in design development. Design of a building should be in relation with concept and client's character so that in can be a part of client but not only a rigid building. Besides, site context is also a crucial point in design as the exact combination between site and building enchances the final design. Lastly, I found that the success of a project will depend on how efficient project teams are in executing project goals and objectives.
